The Savoy Ballroom

One of the most popular spots on the South Side of Chicago for African Americans was the famous Savoy Ballroom located on 4733 S. King Dr. (formally South Parkway). From famous musicians to local little groups, The Savoy housed a number of events, parties, social clubs and more. A little unknown fact about the Savoy is that it housed a roller skating rink as well as a basketball court. The Savoy was also home to the Savoy 5 basketball team who later became the famous Harlem Globetrotters. The Savoy was opened from November 1927 through 1948. Now in it's place is a Cultural Center and parking lot.
